SARAO has an exciting opportunity for a Security Technical Lead to join our
team based in Cape Town. Working as the technical lead of a small team
within the Compute Infrastructure Group, this role takes overall technical
responsibility for cyber security across the organisation including
considerations of both the physical and cyber security needed to secure all
science, business and engineering IT systems to the agreed upon levels.
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) spearheads South
Africa’s activities in the Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope, commonly
known as the SKA, in engineering, science and construction. SARAO is a
National Facility managed by the National Research Foundation and
incorporates radio astronomy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT
and KAT-7 telescopes in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy
Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the African Very Long Baseline
Interferometry (AVN) programme in nine African countries as well as the
associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.
*Minimum education requirements:*
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or
Engineering
Or
- National Diploma in Information Technology or Computer Systems
*Minimum work experience required:*
- Bachelor's degree with at least 7 years working experience in the
field of Information Technology
Or
- National Diploma with at least 10 years working experience in the
field of Information Technology
*Desirable additional educational, work experience, and personal qualities:*
- ISO 9001 Quality Management, Single Sign-On and Federated Identity
(IdP and SP)
- Operating system security in server environments for Linux (Debian /
Ubuntu) and Microsoft Windows
- Science DMZ architecture
*Duties include (but not limited to):*
- Aligning with the SARAO and NRF strategic framework to implement a
defensive strategy to safeguard the organisation's cyber assets (ISO 9001,
ISO 27001 / NIST)
- Developing and implementing policies, standards and procedures for the
organisation's cyber security
- Coordinating with the Finance Department to update and maintain the
organisation's cyber assets register
- Providing a practical and effective user education program around
cyber security
- Providing incident response services to the organisation with
escalation to CSIRT's if required
- Providing guidance to the organisation's Business Continuity
Management plan relating to cyber security
*The ideal candidate will have the following competencies:*
*Ability to:*
- communicate complex information clearly, and to encourage commitment

- display team leadership and mentor
- display strong interpersonal skills including the ability to motivate,
negotiate, influence and build strong relationships
*Experience in:*
- developing innovative solutions and contributing to strategic planning
- managing and controlling budgets/resources/funding and an
understanding of financial management procedures
- open-source tools and operating systems
- defensive security principles and methodologies
*Knowledge of:*
- Virtual environments in particular KVM via Proxmox Enterprise
Visualisation
- Containerised environments in particular Docker and LXC
- Identity and Access Management, Single Sign-On and Federated Identity
(IdP and SP)
- High Performance and High Throughput Science Computing
- regulations and procedures, and the implications of non-compliance
- systems/services for software/hardware development as it relates to IT
security
- ITIL frameworks
- Ansible for configuration, provisioning and deployment - DevOps
- industrial SCADA and building management systems
