*Senior MySQL DBA *
Reporting To:
Engineering Manager: South Africa
Reporting to You:
Team Members assigned as required.
Purpose
Responsible for daily database maintenance, SQL development work for
reporting, optimization of table structures and database performance.
Needs to provide architectural recommendations and best practices based
on research in terms of MySQL databases, global replication and
warehousing.
Key Responsibility Areas:
a. Database: Focussed in the Database Administration and SQL development
activities of MySQL 4 & MySQL 5 databases.
b. Support: Support and maintenance of the existing database
infrastructure in 2 instances, with one instance being global with
various nodes across the globe.
c. Standby: Standby, on-call and support of MySQL databases.
d. Architecture: Architecture and design recommendations and
implementations, in terms of future expansion.
e. Documentation: Author documents as required.
f. Mentoring: Mentor and coach the Engineering team through their
knowledge growth and domain knowledge cycles. Mentoring also takes place
by means of peer reviews and recommendations on the SQL structures used
in code.
g. Coding: PHP/Java/C coding skills will be advantageous, as from time
to time coding is required to automate reports.

skills and able to communicate clearly.
c. Written Communication: ability to write clear and concise documents,
etc.

of development department's customers.
e. Team Work: able to work reliably and responsibly with internal and
external colleagues to achieve development and organisational goals as a
member of a team.
f. Individual Work: able to work alone and to reliably and responsibly
achieve development and organisational goals.
General Competencies:
a. Computer Literate: Proficient in development environment (Linux) as
well as competence in MS Office Suite, Visio, MS Project.
b. Work Style: Foresight, analysis and logic, systematic and orderly
planning, attention to detail.
c. Experience: Experience and relevant knowledge in different
development and database tools, techniques and environments in order to
develop and deliver quality applications and documentation. At least 5
years of solid MySQL DBA experience.
Experience and Education:
a. Experience: Experience in high transactional development environments
in excess of five years will be advantageous. Min. 5 years experience as
a DBA or equivalent.
b. Environments: Experience of working in n-Tier, Client Server and
Database environment as well as experience with open source/Linux
development and production environments.
Personal Characteristics:
a. Excellent logical analysis skills and problem solving.
b. Attention to detail.
c. Self driven.
d. Good communicator and interpersonal skills.
e. Positive outlook on life.
f. Assertive nature.
g. High levels of initiative.
h. Customer service orientated.

Special Requirements:
a. Regular and on time attendance.
b. From time to time you will be required to work outside of normal
working hours.
c. Perform on-call duties if required.
Note:
a. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to
perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed
above are representative of the knowledge; skill and or ability required

b. You will be required to perform all reasonable duties assigned to you
or related or incidental to the proper completion of your job tasks;
c. During a work colleague's leave of absence from the company or during
month end or peak business periods, you may be required to perform other
