Systems Administrator (Jnr)
Introduction
The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) is the national
facility for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa, and is
funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Its core function is
to conduct fundamental research in astronomy and astrophysics by
providing a world-class facility and by promoting astronomy and
astrophysics in Southern Africa. SAAO headquarters are in the suburb
of Observatory in Cape Town, and its observing station is located near
Sutherland in the Northern Cape.
The IT department at the SAAO is responsible for the IT infrastructure
of both Sutherland and Cape Town. Sutherland relies heavily on its own
network infrastructure, control computers, and Internet link. As such,
there are IT requirements in Sutherland for which the Cape Town IT
department is responsible.This person will form part of a
multi-disciplinary team and will be required to assist in the
day-to-day operation and maintenance of both the Cape Town
infrastructure (based in Observatory) as well as that of Sutherland.
Reporting to the Head: IT, the applicant will be responsible for:
Assisting with the day-to-day operation of the SAAO IT infrastructure
including attending to user-support requirements
Be prepared to be on rota to do first-call support (including after-hours)
Upgrading and maintenance of existing systems
Software and application installation and maintenance including
telescope control computers
Training of personnel within the organization
Requirements:
Post Matric qualification within IT, although a BSc (Computer Science,
Information Systems) or BTech (IT) would be advantageous
1-3 years, configuration and maintenance of Linux, OpenSolaris and MS Windows.
Knowledge of networking including TCP/IP, VLANS and VPN’s
Some knowledge of ipfw, IP tables and general firewalling/packet filtering
Understanding of email servers including spam and malware filtering as
well as (but not limited to) the configuration of Postfix
Some database management skills
Familiarity with SAN/NAS storage and clustering a distinct advantage
