I think a lot of people place too much emphasis on salary and
too little on everything else. Earning R40K/m will only get
you about R28k/m after tax. SARS will take almost a third of
your income.

There are other methods to compensate which combined may actually
end up being more important than the salary. For example:

* prospects for professional growth

* reasonable working hours

* equity in the company (a chance to solve your income problem
  once and for all)

* interesting and enjoyable work (no Microsoft stuff) and people 

* office, furniture, and equipment that inspire you to create
  great things 

* payed for trips to conferences (and who said you cannot take your
  significant other with you and have a little vacation mostly on
  the company's dime)

In the end, remember that what's important is how happy the overall
package makes you and your family and not just how much money you
bring home every month.
