A dynamic small IT company, with offices in Cape Town, requires a 
technical support specialist.  We are a tech focused and open source 
shop, without the overheads of a corporate environment.

We make proprietary software products that are sold locally and abroad. 
The remuneration will be market related, depending on experience.

Contract or Permanent

The person taking up this role will become the technical support 
specialist for the existing product suite.  It is an ideal opportunity 
for a person to become well versed in all aspects of technical support 
in an Unix/open source environment, utilising a variety of technologies 
and being mentored by experienced technical specialist.

The person will develop a deep understanding of how this product will 
fit into the client's network architecture, working closely with the 
clients IT department.

The role is vital to ensuring the clients have a positive experience in 
using the product.

The person will also fill the role of a second tier technical support 
person, where you will be responsible for tackling advanced technical 
queries that will originate from our global support base. In this role 
you will investigates reasons, work-arounds and fixes for critical problems


Key Areas

     Hardware troubleshooting and fault finding
     skill in networking topology and infrastructure design and must be
     knowledgeable in the best practices thereof
     Working knowledge of server backup methodologies
     Proven troubleshooting methodology, must be ably to troubleshoot
     problems
     Server hardware including sizing and scalability as well as
     deployment best practices, server management suites, driver
     compatibility checks etc
     High level Understanding of network infrastructure methodologies
     Interface and communicate with other divisions on quote processes,
     upgrades etc
     Ability to use knowledge base resources to resolve problems
     Self improvement is an important aspect for growth
     Be prepared to perform overtime work and after hours support
     Planning and prioritizing application server administration tasks.
     Product installations, configuration and upgrades.
     Monitoring performance tuning and capacity management purposes.
     Centralized backup and restore activities.
     Regular health checks.
     Liaising with development, primarily to resolve problems.
     Dissemination of information to colleagues and management as and
     when required.
     Performing maintenance after-hours and on weekends as and when
     required.

Requirements

     Freebsd,Linux,Windows Server,Exchange 2003/2007 experience
     3-5 years relevant experience in a similar role.
     Experience with installation, configuration and maintenance of open
     source solutions like Apache,
     Tomcat, MySQL, 4. Postgresql, Exim, heartbeat resiliency, and SNMP
     type monitoring.
     Develop custom routing solutions with exim.
     3-5 years experience in FreeBSD, Linux and Windows server
     environments, FreeBSD being predominant.
     Experience in scripting beneficial, Bash, Perl and PHP would be
     preferable.
