Job Description: Desktop Engineer in Central Durbanville 





Responsibilities: 

    1. 

Provide a central point of contact for IT department 
    2. 

Provide installation and support of desktop hardware, software and associated peripherals 
    3. 

Installing and upgrading operating systems, MS Office & Open Office applications (mostly spreadsheet and writer) and utilities by the use of software updates, service packs and patches 
    4. 

Fault finding and rectification of software faults including reconfiguration and reloading of software, if necessary. 
    5. 

Upgrading and replacement of equipment down to component level (CPUs, memory, graphics cards etc.) 
    6. 

Troubleshooting and rectification of hardware faults including if needed liaising with external suppliers, it may also require use of device driver software updates and patches 
    7. 

Ordering new hardware, software and other peripherals from suppliers 
    8. 

Setting up new users with all IT requirements 
    9. 

First-line client-side assistance of such as but not limited to: 

Operating systems (Microsoft XP and Linux) Vista beneficial 

Rsync backup software 

Antivirus Software 

Any kind of connectivity (wireless and 3G dialup) 
    10. 

Keeping site-documentation up to date 
    11. 

Maintain knowledge of new developments within regarding Desktop issues 
    12. 

Recording of findings for the addition to the helpdesk maintained knowledge database 





Formal qualifications 

MCP, MCSE or A+ or equivalent or relevant diploma would be beneficial 




Minimum work experience required 

1 year experience in support desktop technologies 

1 year experience in installing and configuring computers(Microsoft and Linux) 




Skills 

    1. 

Microsoft Windows/ Office and Linux operating systems and Open Office skills and troubleshooting experience 
    2. 

Intuitive hardware troubleshooting skills – mostly IBM Laptops 
    3. 

Natural and in depth understanding of the Internet 
    4. 

Understand Linux file system, Samba, Apache, Email Servers 
    5. 

Excellent customer service skills and presentable appearance 
    6. 

Excellent organisational skills 
    7. 

Excellent oral and written communication skills 
    8. 

Excellent problem solving/ analytical skills 
    9. 

Willingness to acquire and learn new skills as the company develops

Terms of employment 

3 to 6 month contract (negotiable)
