SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL ASTROPHYSICS AND SPACE SCIENCE PROGRAMME
(NASSP)

The NASSP is a unique project drawing together researchers
from South African Universities and National Facilities to
present a combined postgraduate degree programme hosted at the
University of Cape Town. The Honours and Masters programmes
offer students from Africa and the rest of the world an
opportunity to gain an internationally recognized postgraduate
degrees in Astrophysics and Space Science under the tuition
and mentorship of South Africa's leading scientists.

NASSP has recently obtained funding to set up a dedicated
computer laboratory to service the programme and therefore
seeks to fill the following post:

COMPUTER OFFICER (six hours per day)

DUTIES:

Responsibility for the entire IT infrastructure, including
all servers, the local network (approximately 40 computers),
installation and maintenance of hardware, software, user
accounts, multimedia, programme website and security. The
computer officer will also provide support to student and
lecturer users and interact with IT personnel at the South
African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), the South African
Large Telescope (SALT) and the University of Cape Town,
including use of the web for obtaining and placing learning
materials.

REQUIREMENTS:

        Extensive experience in the administration of a
        Linux-based multi-user environment (Debian GNU/Linux,
        LDAP, NFS, SMTP, IMAP, RIPv2, et al.) including Open
        Source Software such as Apache, OpenOffice, various
        mathematical and computational packages and libraries
        (for example Maple, Matlab, Octave, IRAF etc.).

        Experience with hardware support and procurement.

        A customer-service orientation.

        Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills. The
        ability to operate in a high-demand environment,
        and to be self-motivated.

        Good written and spoken communication skills.

        A tertiary qualification and/or a relevant recognised
        IT qualification would be an advantage.


RECOMMENDATIONS:

Knowledge of any of: PHP, numerical computing and numerical
libraries, LaTeX, python or Perl, TCP/IP, DNS, working
knowledge of Windows-related software, educational experience.

The position will initially be for a contract period of one
year after which post will be reviewed with the intention of
extending it for 1 further year.

Commencement of duties: 1 April 2006
