Are you sure about that ? I've just checked a machine with an ne2k-pci 
card, and lsmod gives me this:

ne2k-pci                6720   1
8390                    8180   0  [ne2k-pci]

You are right about the chipset though: /proc/pci gives this:

Bus  0, device  12, function  0:
  Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8029(AS)
