AIMS is a unique new academic institute currently being established
with the help of international and local funding. Supported by the
Universities of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, The Western Cape, Cambridge,
Oxford and Orsay, its purpose is to offer top-quality postgraduate
courses in the mathematical sciences to students from all over Africa,
preparing them for cutting-edge research and exciting new career
paths.  Students will live and study in the AIMS building in
Muizenberg, Western Cape.

A director responsible for the facility and the academic programme has
already been appointed.  AIMS now seeks to fill the following post:

                         COMPUTER OFFICER

Responsibility for the entire IT infrastructure, including all
servers, the local network (starting with approximately 60 computers),
installation and maintenance of hardware, software, user accounts,
multimedia and security.  The computer officer will also supervise
support to student and lecturer users, including use of the web for
obtaining and placing learning material.

1. A degree or diploma in the computational, mathematical, physical or
engineering sciences.
2. Extensive experience in the administration of a Linux/Unix-based
multi-user environment, including Open Source Software such as Apache,
OpenOffice, various mathematical and computational packages and
3. Experience with hardware support and procurement.

Knowledge of any of: PHP, numerical computing and numerical libraries,
LaTeX, python or perl, TCP/IP, DNS, working knowledge of
Windows-related software, educational experience.

The position will initially be for a contract period of two years
after which posts will be reviewed. 

Commencement of duties: 1 August 2003.
